If you’re raising a grievance at work, timing is everything. Most people lose their claims not because they’re wrong — but because they miss the deadline.
Here’s the playbook that protects your rights.
Your Grievance Steps
Listen up – this is your playbook. 1️⃣ Draft your grievance letter with facts, evidence, impact, and what needs fixing. 2️⃣ Bring a colleague or union rep to the meeting — never walk in alone. 3️⃣ Appeal the outcome if it’s wrong, and insist on someone impartial.
The Golden Rule
Your legal clock starts from the last unlawful act. You have 3 months minus 1 day to start ACAS. The grievance process does not pause this clock.
Employers delay on purpose. Don’t fall for it.
Run Both Processes in Parallel
Start ACAS Early Conciliation to pause the tribunal clock
File your ET1 before the final deadline — even if your appeal is ongoing
If your employer ignores the ACAS Code, tribunals can add up to 25% to your compensation.
You’re not the little guy. You’re a warrior with a map.
